I've just returned from the International Parking Institute's annual conference and exhibition. Walking the floor it was interesting to note all the potential for asset tracking. Initially we decided to attend the show to determine the level of interest in our RFID windshield tags. Even within that narrowly defined opportunity there are several different applications from access control within a secured parking lot to vehicular inventory tracking. Of the companies we talked to all had obviously heard of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), some already have RFID enabled systems, and others felt it was a matter of when not if that they would need to incorporate this technology. Aside from RFID windshield tags, other opportunities presented themselves including tool tracking, asset tracking (other than vehicles) and even OEM product identification to name a few.
Overall it was exciting to see RFID technology becoming a more mainstream topic of conversation at more market oriented trade show events. A few years ago if someone were to mention RFID vehicle tracking one would automatically think of using the technology used in toll road applications. While that may still be a common thought, people's minds are definitely more open to other application possibilities as they continue to discover that with RFID almost anything is possible.Labels: radio frequency identification, rfid, rfid labels, rfid tags, rfid windshield tags, vehicle tracking
