Controlling Access with RFID

Access control is becoming a huge application and market opportunity for RFID. I suppose when people think about access control the first application to come to mind is parking. Yes, parking access is a huge part of the overall access control market. However, there are many other potential applications out there as well. It seems like every time I talk to the people in our RFID division there is another potential application for access control. First, it was gated commununities which, when you think about it, totally makes sense because it is an additional security measure for the people living in those communities to be able to control who has access and also be able to record when they were granted that access.

Car washes are another interesting access control application. We have customers who are using the RFID tag to track a service offering - whether it is for unlimited monthly washes or another type of service such as a loyalty program - in one way or another it is still controlling who has access to that program.

The latest access control application I have come across is managing gate access to a waste transfer station. Specifically, the customer wanted to control the residential access to the waste transfer station and link the gate activity to their town records.
It seems as though access control application opportunities are all around us and RFID is a perfect solution. Of course, the one thing these three examples all had in common is that they used Metalcraft's RFID Windshield Tag as their RFID product of choice.
